A fine1949 Airplane Globe While the 1925 Exposition des Arts Decorativs et Industiels Modernes in Paris launched the rise of the Art Deco movement, in the USA a group of engineers, architects and artists forged a new America Design aesthetic. Their work moved away from the decorative French mode towards the clean lines of the German Bauhaus movement, finally attaining its unmistakable American Modern Style. As a result, strikingly innovative objects were produced, from individual pieces of art to everyday used pieces. One may think of buildings designed by Frankl, cocktail glassed styled by by Bel Geddes or textile prints by Edward Steichen. The clean, streamline features and the absence of traditional ornamental features introduced the American Middle Class to the Machine Age, when form and function finally merged. With its superb American Modern Base inform of an Airplane, this terrestrial Globe is not just a vintage scientific instrument, but undeniably also a fine piece of Art. The same model can be found at the Vienna Globe Museum , part of the National Library of Austria. This is an exceptional opportunity to obtain a true Artifact. About the manufacture: Weber Costello Co 1907- c 1960/ C.F. Weber & Co c 1900-1907/ A.H. Andrews & Co 1865-c1900 Chicago A.H. Andrews & Co sold the Globe manufacturing branch to C.F. Weber & Co. at the turn of the century, who marketed the globes as “C.F. Weber & Co, successor to A.H. Andrews and Co, Chicago”. Around 1907 the name changed to the Weber Costello Company. Weber Costello continued production of globes until the early 1960’s. In addition to its own models, the company also produced models for some of the other Chicago Globe makers such as Rand McNally, Nystrom, Denoyer-Geppert and Cram’s. In 1942 the United States Office of Strategic Services ( OSS ) Map Division compiled the map for a 50-inch globe that was to be given to President Roosevelt by Colonel William J. Donovan, the OSS Director. Instead, acting on a suggestion by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, General George C. Marshall arranged to have one of the large globes presented to Prime Minister Winston Churchill and another to President Roosevelt as 1942 Christmas gifts from the Army. Ultimately, the Weber Costello Company of Chicago Heights , Illinois , produced some twelve or fifteen copies of the President's Globe between 1942 and 1955 when the company ceased operation. Churchill's globe is now at Chartwell and Roosevelt 's is at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library. The story of these globes is based on the recollection of an individual who was involved in the map making. Weber Costello also produced some of the most beautiful mountings, such as the highly desirable deco airplane base and this attractive nouveau style. Unfortunately the company is a name of the past as they closed their own door in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s and out-sourced production from there on for a few more years. All that remains are some of the most magnificent terrestrial globes ever made. Description: The globe itself consists of a paste board orb, mounted into a numeric half meridian which is attached to a metal base, molded in form of an airplane. The map has black oceans instead of the more common blue/green. It provides a fantastic contrast to the colored lands and the high luster chrome finish of the base. Diameter of the globe is 12 inches with a total height of 16 inches Condition: The globe is in good condition. Colors are vivid with the exception of the color red which appears to have slightly faded. Details are crisp. No loss of map, no rubbing but very minor scuffing present. The base and meridian are also in good condition, no cracks or rust. There is some pitting to the meridian; the base could use a polish. The chrome still has a very brilliant shine. Please see pictures for details The age of the Globe has been determined by political ...
