An exquisite1908 dated Terrestrial Globe This superb Artifact is sharing the history of a world 103 years ago, a world one can learn only of in books today. An era of exploration as much of the Antarctica is still virgin territory, only a few outlines are documented. The British, French, German, Austria-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires are shown at their height of conquering the world through colonization. Vienna , Constantinople and St. Petersburg , the Metropolitan centers of Society and incubators of culture & art of the turn of the century are well documented. Truly a fine example of superb craftsmanship with beautiful and well preserved coloring! Exceptional attention to detail by the globe maker is evident throughout the map. The ever so delicately engraved map identifies mountain ranges and isothermal movement in addition to a more traditional globe. The mounting also shows fine artistic skill with its beautiful Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) cast iron base with warm copper accent. Notice the three claw foot encased glass marble feet. Each glass marble contains a mysterious animal. This we discovered by accident when cleaning the artifact. The glass has clouded over the years, but we detect a camel in one of the marbles, however we can’t agree on the other two (our opinions have included elephants and lions….to name a few). Even though we have had similar models in ownership before, it had never contained these detailed marbles. What an interesting mystery! An exceptionally sophisticated terrestrial Globe, may it be for the history it reveals or the beauty it displays. If you collect the rarely obtainable or are looking for an heirloom for generations to come.....this artifact is for you. This model will be disassembled and shipped in two boxes to ensure safe and intact arrival. Please feel free to view this globe as well as many others in our store, located in Lynchburg , Virginia ( USA ). More pictures are available upon request. About the globe maker: Rand McNally & Co. (1856 [1880 globe production] – current), ChicagoWilliam Rand opened his first print shop in 1856, hired McNally, an Irish immigrant, in 1858. In 1868, the two established a partnership and the name Rand McNally & Co. As a print shop they produced the newspaper for the Chicago Tribune as well as timetables, travel guides and tickets for the fast growing railroad industry. In 1872, the company pioneered cerography, an innovative wax-engraving print technique that made it possible to follow world changes in print quickly and more economically. As a result, even though they did not make globes themselves until 1880, by the end of the late 1800s Rand McNally were producing globe gores not just for their own models, but for many of the other Chicago Globe makers. Description: The plaster orb itself is covered with 12 individual, hand mounted paper gores with exceptionally detailed map and cradled by an elegant, exceptional detailed cast iron Art Nouveau Floor base with Horizon ring and glass ball feet (containing animals). Refined engraving documents fine mountain ranges, isothermal lines, rivers and more. The coloring of golden lands and soft green oceans provide a perfectly aged vintage patina. Diameter of the globe itself is 12 inches with a total height of about 36 inches. Condition: Even though not perfect, the globe is in good condition for its age. Colors are rich, details crisp. No cracks or loss of map, but rubbing, soiling and scuffing is visible throughout. The horizon ring has loss of paper and cracked in a few places due to extreme dryness. The cast iron base is in superb condition, no corrosion or cracks. The meridian however looks like it has been repaired at the bottom (South Polar region)There is some slight greening of the copper on one of the claws.
