Pretoria Mint, South Africa 1926 World Trade Center Gold Sovereign PCGS "GEM UNCIRCULATED" Rare WTC Recovered Coin / Pristine Specifications : AGW: 0.2354 oz. PURE GOLD Condition: Gem Uncirculated Diameter: 22.05 mm Weight: 7.9881 grams Purity: 91.6 Gold OBVERSE: Bare Head of George V with the title: "GEORGIUS V D. G. BRITT: OMN REX F. D. IND: IMP:" REVERSE: Saint George slaying dragon on horseback designed by Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci Mint mark "SA" and initals "B.P." Gold and silver owned by the COMEX Banking System in several vaults located several floors underground directly below the ill-fated World Trade Center Towers. "Besides legions of police officers who prevented onlookers from approaching the Trade Center site, the Bank of Nova Scotia, one of the COMEX members, hired its own security force to protect its assets. According to bank of Nova Scotia officials, 379,036 ounces of gold and 29,942,619 ounces of silver were stored in the vaults. That's 11.8 tons of gold and 935.7 tons of silver. Most of this was made up of silver bars and us gold and silver coinage. Nearly all of the gold and silver was owned by people or companies who bought the metals as investments. On October 30, 2001, workers finally unearthed the treasure. As a small army of federal agents armed with shotguns and automatic rifles stood guard, New York City Police officers and firefighters packed several Brinks armored trucks with the lode. Officials reched the gold and silver by clearing a tunnes blocked by a 10-wheel truck, several crushed cars and mounds of debris. Finally, a small buldozer smashed down a wall inside the tunnel and the Brinks trucks entered the cavern just before sunset. Since most of the gold and silver coins were the property of individuals or companies, very little would ever be made available for sale to the general public.
