This solid, steel, WW II, combat helmet has never had anything done with it, save a bit of polishing perhaps. This package includes steel helmet; a fiberglass liner with adjustable webbing that holds the adjustable sweat band; an adjustable, head-back strap; a web netting that covers the outside of the helmet (similar to the helmets you see in the movie, "Saving Private Ryan"); adjustable chin straps for the steel helmet--the snap style, which according to many "experts", is the conventional World War II strap.(see photo accompanying picture of net webbing on steel helmet and suspension inside of liner at bottom of description.) The fiberglass liner with suspension is NOT the original equipment--rotten webbing, shriveled leather sweat bands, etc., have all been replaced with new items. Regardless, the liner with suspension fits perfectly into the WW II steel helmet. Also, the fiberglass liner holds the suspension--adjustable webbing, and sweat band. It presses snugly into the helmet, holding the net webbing firmly on the outside of the helmet also. The adjustable webbing inside the fiberglass liner can be adjusted for how high or low the helmet sits on the head. According to most helmet "experts", the main World War II identifying characteristic of this helmet is the RIM AROUND THE BOTTOM OF THE HELMET BEING CONNECTED IN FRONT OF THE HELMET (at the point of the visor.) Keep in mind, the helmet is not new--57 to 60 years old to be exact. It might contain some dents, or less than perfect paint job--the paint is original. A possible bleed-through even of a tint and t of yellow or red--from metal primer coats perhaps? However,THIS HELMET HAS NOT BEEN PAINTED, TRYING TO FANCY IT UP!! Whether a slight dent or wearing paint came during actual combat conditions or hard retirement, I don't know. Also, again, the paraphernalia inside the suspension, i.e., sweat band, net webbing, is NOT the original equipment. It has been replaced with new, sturdy, solid items. This description of the complete helmet package is not meant to be misleading. To some viewers, however,(mostly helmet "experts") it appears that way. When I list the steel pot itself as RARE, WORLD WAR II HELMET, invariably someone who professes to be an "expert" on helmets, emails me that the helmet is NOT a WW II helmet and that it is NOT rare--as though one could pick up a WW II helmet anytime at the local grocery or hardware store. When I list the other helmet as U.S. MILTARY, COMBAT HELMET,and possibly as a KOREAN CONFLICT or VIETNAM WAR HELMET, invariably another "expert" on helmets, emails me that the helmet could NOT be a Korean Conflict or Vietnam War helmet because the helmets in those wars had a quick release hook-and-arrow on one side of the chin strap, not the snap on the one in the photo I supply. Besides that, they insist, the helmet doesn't look like the ones they saw in the movies last night. For every positive, identifying aspect of exactly what the helmet is according to one "expert", another "expert" positively identifies it exactly the opposite. I've finally decided t are more "experts" in the inantimate, steel-helmet industry than t are in the medical industry. So, PLEASE, if you're a picky, meticulous collector, and the rim connection in front of the helmet is not sufficient evidence that this is truly a World War II helmet, or you have an aversion to anything about the suspension not being original equipment, DO NOT buy this helmet. I repeat--DO NOT BUY THIS HELMET. If, however, you want some memorabilia from a bye-gone era, or want to use the helmet for something else--as a patriotic piece for display maybe, or a gift to someone--son, grandson, or great grandson perhaps--to give them a touch of atmosp of a special time in your life; or for other uses, limited only by the limitations of one's imagination, then this is a great buy.
