From the comic page to the silver screen, Batman has thrilled millions around the world with his incredible adventures. While he started as the Dark Knight, a vengeful and angry man, he softened during the fifties as DC placed him in a serious of somewhat implausible science fiction or humor stories. In 1964 Infantino and DC revamped the character. Among other things, they added a yellow background to the bat-insignia on his uniform. More importantly they started to bring him back to his detective roots. Gone were the rainbow creatures and aliens from the fifties and early sixties. Superman changed the comic industry. His first appearance in Action #1 was an overnight sensation. Prior to that issue's publication the industry generally relied on reprints of newspaper strips. Original material was a bit of a hard sell the the public. The creation of two teenagers from Cleveland, (Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel) the character has gone on to become a national institution.
