T is neither a painting in the mind Nor a mind in the painting: And yet, w else can one find a painting Than in the mind? Avatamsaka Sutra "Preserving the Sacred Arts is always part of the preservation of Dharma"~ Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche ~ BIG thangka of Amitayus as the central figure of a composition commonly known as the Long-Life Trinity or Healing Trinity. Below in this painting are White Tara and Ushnisha Vijaya. T are very few thankgas being painted by Tibetans today, and very few indeed done by 6th and 7th generation Tibetan painters like this one. This thangka was painted by people who I truly regard as my second family! Read the paragraph below for information on them. The pencil design drawing for this thangka was done by a 6th generation Tibetan thangka painter!! It has gotten very hard for the few Tibetan traditional thangka painters left in Nepal to make a living and compete with the Newari and Tamang painters who are wonderful artists but often don't follow the traditional methods. Please help support actual Tibetans painting with traditional methods! Most thangkas (yes, including most of the ones that I carry) are painted by Tamang, Newari, or Sherpa painters in Nepal. While they create true works of art they concentrate more on excrutiating detail than on making them correct according to the traditional methods and proportions. BIG!!!! Measuring about 20 inches by 30 inches minus the outermost red borders. I had the privilege of living with a Tibetan family in Kathmandu for almost 3 months in the summer of 2006, and 3 weeks in 2007 that contained a 6th generation and 7th generation thangka painter. Like every single other thangka done t, whether by students or by the masters - this one was begun by the man I called "Po-po-la" for 3 months, whose real Tibetan name is Thargyal. Before beginning any thangka, he reads the corresponding scriptures about the deities to be portrayed. Then he draws the figures in pencil according to strict geometic proportions written many hundreds of years ago. After that, the painting begins - with colors that have also been described for centuries. Po-po-la is now 77 years old and escaped from Tibet in 1962, shortly after being released from 3 years imprisonment and torture by the Chinese. He escaped over the border to Nepal close to Mt. Everest and stayed in the Khumbu region for many years, painting for Rinpoches in the area. He went back to Tibet when conditions improved in 1980 and got one of his sons, Wangdi, out. He has painted thangkas for Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Sakya Trizin, and many others. Several noted Western thangka artists have also studied with him for long periods, notably Andy Weber. Buddha Amitayus is the Buddha of long life, good fortune and wisdom. He is depicted as red in colour, holding a life vase brimming with the nectar of immortality. Buddha Amitayus is the samboghakaya "enjoyment body" of Buddha Amitabha who is the "emanation body". Buddha Amitayus is practised extensively in Tibetan Buddhism and New Kadampa Tradition. His short mantra is given as OM AMARANI ZEWÃ,,NTEYE SÃ-HA or OM AMARANI JIWANTIYE SWAHA. Amitayus is the Sambhogakaya form of Amitabha, the red Buddha of âeoeInfinite Lightâe, who is assigned to the western quadrant as the lord of the Padma or Lotus Family. Amitayus and the goddesses White Tara and Ushnisha Vijaya form a trinity of long-life deities, and this composition is often commissioned to increase the lifespan of a beloved friend, relative, or revered teacher. Together White Tara, Amitayus, and Ushnishavijaya form the triad traditionally known as the Longevity Trinity. White Tara, who is associated with wisdom and compassion, holds a blue lotus and a pink lotus, which symbolize purity. Amitayus holds a vase filled with the elixir of immortality. Their blessings prolong the time available for working on behalf of sentient be...
