Another absolutely stunning piece from Pacific Northwest sculptor and knifemaker Douglas Gilbert!! Mr. Gilbert has decided to part with a few of his knives to finance a forthcoming trip to Europe to compete in a sculpting contest. From the choice of materials to the elegant design lines, this is another piece that embodies what a custom knife is all about. The symmetry is outstanding with its wide blade and wide, flat stag pommel. The blade is thick and wide, while the handle is of thick, aged stag set under layers of Yellowheart, Ebony, Manzanita, Maple, and a stunning disc of Desert Ironwood. Everything, including the unique spacers, is hand made by Mr. Gilbert. The elegantly curved brass guard was hand sculpted by Mr. Gilbert. A very nice touch, as many custom makers us "off-the-shelf" guards. The stag handle has been hand selected to fit the hand perfectly. The most unique and pleasing aspect of Mr. Gilbert's knives is that each one naturally seeks a perfect balance when the knife is layed in the open hand. I have never handled more perfectly balanced knives, and this example is certainly no exception. The handle and guard are so perfectly placed and balanced, that the knife seems to grip the hand, instead of the other way around. It feels like it's locked in your grip.
