Huge Sale from Multiple Estates... The estate inventory #7026 says this carving is by Jimmy Iqaluq (born 1947) from Sanikiluaq, Belcher Islands This sculpture is so sweet. This sculpture is in mint condition and listed on the estate inventory as "two ducks and nest". This is a sculpture of two birds (loons or ducks?) guarding their nest of 2 smooth eggs and a baby duck. The package with the eggs and baby duck has never been opened since my father purchased it in 1982. I didn't even notice the baby bird until today because it was covered with the loose feathers also included in the plastic package. I did poke a small hole in the package exposing only the baby birds head so I could get a better photo, but the package remains sealed. I don't know what kind of stone this is, maybe argillite, serpentine or soapstone. The stone is a really pretty green color with veining and is cold to the touch. Each of the large ducks have wooden pegs in its underside that fits into a hole on the base of the sculpture. T are some soft baby feathers (fuzz) that are glued into the nest of the base. One of the large ducks weigh approx. 3 lbs. and measures approx. 8" x 3" x 4-1/2" high. The other large duck weighs approx. 2 lbs. and measures approx. 10" x 4" x 2" high. The baby duck measures approx. 1-1/4" x 3/4" x 1" high. The two eggs each measure approx. 1" x 2". The base weighs approx. 3 pounds and measures approx. 8-1/4" x 5-1/2" x 1-1/4" high. The based is signed along with the copywright symbol and perhaps even numbered. The sticker on the base says, "carving number 827-37 (or Z) 30. T is also a "Authenticity" sticker on the base. Please see the following information about the "Authenticity". The egg and baby duck plastic package has a Red Bear sticker on it that says "California Tax Paid..." with the number 20 and the code P7793. That is pretty much all I can tell you about this Sculpture. I am not an expert (by far) and I did my best describing this sculpture and in providing all the information I could find. This sculpture is from my father's collection and t is more to come. Canadian Inuit Sculpture AuthenticityGiven the fact that Inuit sculptures are highly prized as Canadian souvenirs and as art objects, it is unfortunately inevitable that mass-produced reproductions and imitations have proliferated. These items, made of plastic, ceramic or "cast stone", sometimes tempt the uninformed consumer by their lower price. These imitations generally have no investment or aesthetic value whatsoever, and are in no way endorsed by the Canadian government or the Inuit of Canada. In fact, they tend to lower the image and reduce the sales of genuine Inuit sculpture, thus depriving Inuit artists of income. To protect the consumer and Inuit carvers, the Canadian government has registered the symbol of the igloo as a trademark. Sculptures bearing this "igloo tag" or sticker are certified to be handmade by Inuit. Inuit carvers often (but not always) incise the bottoms of their works with their signatures in Roman letters or syllabics. Some sculptures may also have a "disc number" inscribed on the bottom. These numbers, prefixed by an "E" or "W", are another kind of signature. If you have questions concerning any aspect of Inuit sculpture, please contact the Inuit Art Section, Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Ottawa K1A OH4.
