This is a WW II aviator's flying cap or helmet. It is made of heavy cotton. It was never lined, but has sheepskin ear covers sewn to the interior. The helmet fastens over the chin with a leather adjustable strap with a fleece sewn on area w the strap would go over the aviator's chin. On the outer surface of the helmet are three canvas loops, one over each ear area and the other center rear. The ear area straps have snaps to release whatever the loops would have held. In additiion t are, attached to reinforcing canvas straps, five metal double hooks, two on the left one high in the center, and one at the right. On each side of the chinstrap t are a pair of short laces. Inside the helmet, t is a sewn in label reading, "Type A-9, DWG no. 42 G 6851, A. C. Order 42-10385-P, Porperty Air Forces U.S. Army, LARGE." This item appears to be complete and is in excellent condition. T are no rips, tears, holes, broken or missing pieces. All the stitching is in perfect condition. T are no stains or discolorations anyw T are few if any signs of wear. If the item was used at all, the use was very light. This would make a great addtion to a WWII military collection, either of uniforms or of aviation related items. It could be worn to vintage airplane shows...although WW II "large" is way too small for me....I was going to wear it while flying my RC airplanes! Added 3/15. My father in law, a WWII bomber pilot, was visiting us today and I showed him the helmet. He said it is a summer helmet---the winter ones were leather--- and looks very much like the ones he wore in training. He says the loops described in the text and shown in the pictures were to hold goggles in place, especially when flying an open airplane such as the one he flew in basic flight school. The hooks look familiar to him, but he could not remember what they were for. Further information is invited and will be posted to this listing.
