hello selling a very unusual and unique item from the first world war this is a wooden box with measures 8 inches by 5 inches and is just over 2 inches tall this box was hand carved by a soldier in the 9th highland light infantry based in glasgow this was hand carved in the hospital of fleming hospital aberlour, and is dated aug/sept 1916 i will describe each panel of this box on the rear hugh a. darroch No.2437 no1 platoon no1 company 1st glagow highlanders 9th batt highland light infantry on the right side panel battle of Loo's 25th sept 1915 givenchy battle of the somme (highwood) 15th july 1916 front panel is a picture of a field gun with the writing "french 75mm field gun" on the left side panel "trench position 4i4d" and other information but hard to read (possibly trench names) on the lid on the top is carvings of scottish thistle, a soldier, and 2 faces possibly generals or officers of somesort the inside has glasgow 9th H.L.I cap badge scottish thistle and the hospital name and location in aberdeenshire i have included many pictures for you to view a fantastic piece of trench art made by a wounded soldier from somme and loos with name and serial number of the soldier i have not researched this piece but would be great for any historian or collector the box is in fair condition for its age, some rubbing read more
