World War 1 Manasquan, New Jersey Service Medal named to "W.B. MARS". Made of bronze by Whitehead & Hoag. In XF+ condition. Issued as a fob with the name hand engraved on the reverse, satin finish and strong strike and original black drape ribbon in beautiful shape. A rare medal in any condition and being named just adds to it value. This is one of three medals with this design that I know of. The other two are Plymouth, Maine and Sea Girt, N.J. all rare and hard to time. The population of Manasquan in 1920 was 1,703 and I estimate that less than 100 people served in the war making this one of the rarest local town medals and a key medal if you are looking to complete the New Jersy set. Great opportuntity for the advance collector to add a rare named medal to your collection. The Borough's name is of Lenni Lenape origin, Man - A - Squaw - Han (stream of the Island of Squaws). Manasquan, Maniquan, Mannisquan, Manasquam, Squan, and Squan Village are variations on the original pronunciation and spelling. The meaning has also been interpreted as "an island with enclosure for squans." Manasquan was formed as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on December 30, 1887, from portions of Wall Township, based on the results of a referendum held the previous day.Money orders or checks only.
