Thought provoking memorabilia of a soldier's life in the trenches - two miniature (3 1/2"x 2 1/2") books covered with upholstery fabric in tatty but serviceable condition. Both belonged to A.Barclay of Dysart, Fife. The Burns Treasury is inscribed with name and regiment and dated 24/3/16 - "Sergt" is wriitten before the name possibly with another nib. Alexander Barclay was in the 179th Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers, died 25/4/1918 aged 28, killed in action, and lies in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery. The books are (1) a combined edition of A Burns Treasury and the Songs of Burns in The Miniature Series published in Edinburgh by Nimmo, Hay and Mitchell and (2) Scott's The Lady of the Lake in the Thistle Library published by Valentine & Anderson of Edinburgh, Dundee and London. Both are illustrated. I assume by the size, the condition, the personal covering and the inscription that these went with him to the front and returned to Scotland with some of his effects. He was evidently a man who thought much of home.
