This is an original cap badge of the North Somerset Yeomanry. The regiment was first raised in Frome in 1768. A condition of service was that it should not be marched more than 10 miles from the town. It was disbanded in 1802 and Frome Troop was formed in 1803 and then united with The East Mendip Corps. In 1804 this new Yeomanry Regiment became the |North Somerset Yeomanry Cavalry in 1814. They could not, however, be compelled to serve overseas so they were split into 1st, 2nd and 3rd lines. The 1st line regiment became the 1st South Western Mounted Brigade and in France Joined the 6th Cavalry Brigade and the 3rd Cavalry Division. Trench ware-fare had little scope for cavalry but they saw action in Ypres, Loos, Arras and Scarpe. An interesting history!
