WW1 Oil Painting, Naval Scene - America France Germany?

's a great World War 1 or possibly earlier, oil painting of a naval action showing a roiling sea, a light destroyer or corvette in the foreground, heeled over belching smoke. A couple of other ships appear in the distance and the painting clearly shows a nasty, cloudy sky marked by battle smoke and a frothy, North Atlantic looking sea. By way of disclaimer, let me say that I'm not sure of the nationality of the ships, the type of craft and the era, though by the looks of the rear of the painting and stretcher, I think it is depicting a WW1 scene - possibly a specific battle or ship. I do believe it is the work of an illustrator as it is done in black and white and shades of gray as if for a magazine or book of the times. It is obviously a quality painting and I believe, the work of a professional. I bought it at a local flea market and the seller remarked that the painter was "listed" - I guess i should have written down his interpretation of the scrawled signature because i haven't the foggiest now. Your guess is as good as mine, perhaps some kindly Ebayer will be able to offer an opinion as to this artist's identity. The painting is generally in excellent shape for it's age and other than some staining on the back of the canvas and a bit of paint chipping on the left side (see picture), it only need to be put into a heroic looking frame and hung on the wall of your choice. It is solidly attached to the stretcher and doesn't have any holes or tears. It measures 18 1/4" high and 15" wide. You can buy this neat nautical/military painting by a possibly famous artist (just don't tell me) for a mere $249.95 OBO! NOTE: Anyone hitting the Buy It Now button will get free shipping in the continental US (and probably internationally as well, depending on w you live).
