A fascinating account and diary of one mans war I have no name but a lot of clues This man must have been into his thirties when he went to war and was possibly drafted he was a rail man serving from August 11th 1900 to October 30th 1915 he resigned at Deal in Kent Joined the Royal Garrison Artillery,(hand drawn diagram of kit laid out on bed) arrived in France on 1st March 1916 at Boulougne, Poperinge on the 23rd burried 4 men on the 1st of April who had been killed the night before mentioned Baptism of fire 2nd April &1st Battery position, Kemmel for three weeks left 28th arrived at Dernancourt eventually South of Albert," near Albert getting ready for big strafe "Went into position N of Albert along lake,started big bombardment July 1st (first day of the Somme) left position for a place slightly in advance to the south on night of 15th everywhere shooting successful. then we have a reference to Colonel Paget Hazebrook ROD R.E. who I believe to be Cecil Paget (in charge of train repairs) our man then gets transferred to 29th light railway and transferred into the Royal Engineers possibly because of his previous railway knowledge L R O D Light Rail Operating Division? March 27th 1917. There are a few blank pages and an account of his wages.and lots of other pages to read through it is a superb account /diary.
