"The Star of the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to the most outstanding of Generals who performed feats of leadership to the extreme benefit of the German State. It was awarded only twice, over a century apart, to Generalfeldmarschall von Blücher in 1813 and to Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg in 1918. Von Blücher's award was referred to as the Blücherstern while Hindenburg's was known as the Hindenburgstern." The Grand Cross of the iron cross was awarded only 5 times in the 1st World War. Paul von Hindenburg got, like Bluecher before, a special layer of the Grand Cross, the so-called "Hindenburgstern". The Grand Cross was the highest German war medal. A crown is on the front of the iron cross on the upper cross arm. In the middle he "W" for Wilhelm II. and under this the foundation date 1914. On the back a crown is on the upper cross arm and the initials "FW" Friedrich Wilhelm III. in the middle finds an oak leaves the first foundation date 1813 in the lower cross arm.
