WW2 Japanese officer's Kyu-Gunto mounted blade. Very rare mounts.
This great Kyu-Gunto style sword is a very rare type. It's Military Kyu-Gunto in design but has no military decoration, making this an extremely rare and lovely piece of history. The style is very similar (in its lack of decoration) to the rare prison officer's sword. The difference being this one is certainly military in design. Although this would be classed as an unidentified pattern sword circa 1900. It is most likely an early POW prison camp officer's sword (in my opinion). This style of mount is so rare it is unlikely there are many in existence. I certainly have never come across one before and it is not in the Fuller and Gregory book 'Military Swords of Japan 1868-1945'. The blade is in good condition for its age with some surface dirt, nicks and scratches. It looks like a family/traditionally made blade. It will need a polish and a good clean to bring it back to it's original condition. The Hamon is there, it is not constantly visible due to the polish but will come up after a little work. The Hamon is a very nice, lively shape and is clear on most of the blade. Unfortunately the condition of the polish makes it impossible to see if there is grain (Hada) present. The tip is clearly intact and the blade is ready for a polish. It is held into the handle by a bolt in the end. I will not attempt to remove it as I do not want to damage it. This fine example of these very rare Kyu-Gunto style mounts are complete and in great condition. The black ray skin on the Tsuka (handle) is in good condition and the wire wrap is very good. The catch is working perfectly and is in fine condition. The scabbard (Saya) is a nickel plated example with some wear due to age as you would expect but it is still very good. The suspension rig is still attached and the Saya is in good usable condition. This fine sword would have been in operational use from approximately 1900 and would have seen the Russo-Japanese war, WW1, the invasion of China and was probably still in service throughout WW2. This piece of history is a great talking point and a highly collectable item. If you collect Japanese military swords, this is the chance to own something no one else has. An important piece for study. For further details on this type of sword please see 'Military swords of Japan' by Fuller and Gregory where as this exact sword is too rare to appear, very similar Kyu-Gunto are well described. Please study the pictures carefully as I do not accept returns.
