Great souvenir from WW2 veteran. A late war Japanese NCO sword and scabbard almost fully covered in knotted string wrapping. Probably done by a U.S. Navy seaman on board ship. Handle is covered with intricately knotted string of different types, down to about the spring catch lever. You can see the wood handle with grooves of the late war type NCO mounting underneath the wrap. The tsuba is a flat piece of steel and black in color. It has some losses to the painted finish. Almost the entire scabbard is covered in intricate knots of string with other ornamental wrapping on top. The ring is also covered most of the way and has a tassle fitted. T are some losses to the wrapping down near the bottom drag tip. The string has darkened with age and shows some fraying in spots, but is generally in good shape. The blade shows some minor rust spots and light pitting a few areas, but overall is mostly bright and in good shape. Most of the pitting is near the tip. No edge nicks. The blade and scabbard are serial numbered 207765 (matching numbers) and t is a small partial arsenal stamp on the blade next to the serial number. Blade is a nice snug fit in the scabbard. Please see all the photos of this unique sword. NOTE: Ebay's shipping calculator is not working well for oversized packages.
