Approximately 2.5 million US M3 Trench Knives were made between March 1943 and July 1944. The characteristics of this Imperial knife indicate it was the 5th of seven variations by this maker. This is a really nice example of the World War Two US GI M3 Trench Knife and M8 Scabbard . This knife is by the Imperial Knife Company , Providence, Rhode Island, and is guard marked, mid-war design, a utility/fighting knife. The blade's Parkerized finish is medium gray, has not been resharpened. The only wear is from the anti-rattle springs in the throat of the M8 scabbard. The "Tootsi Roll" leather handle has nice color and patina, eight grooves, and NO plastic spacers , (indicating the first of the guard marked knives), is tight with no broken washers, nor deep scars. The butt plate, with its ordnance bomb, is correctly retained by a "Starburst" peen. The rareish 1st design M8 scabbard is by Beckwith, B. M. Co. Nicely Parkerized metal throat, and original paint with normal wear to the finish.....It is has the short length frog without belt hanger of khaki webbing and with the small dot snap fastener. This style scabbard was replaced by the modified M8 and/or M8-A1's with the longer webbing and bent wire belt hanger toward the end of the war....
