This listing represents a first for me, and a very rare WWII item. you have a sterling and 10 karat gold filled Merchant Marine Officerâe(tm)s Eagle and Anchor Cap Badge. The badge is marked and in near mint to mint condition. The cap badge has a WWII pin back mechanism with cradle and locking mechanism. Hilborn Hamburger crafted the USMS Officerâe(tm)s Cap Badge. Hilborn is a noted maker of Navy Insignia. The cap badge depicts a finely detailed eagle perched on a shield with an anchor and framed within a wreath. The anchor and wreath are 1/20th 10 Karat Gold Fill. The Eagle and Shield are sterling silver. The insignia is tfore made of precious metals. The gold literally is gleaming. The cap badge is exquisitely crafted like fine jewelry. The cap Badge measures 1.25 by 1.375 inches. It is in near mint to mint condition. The Merchant Marine was the first to take the fight to the enemy. Convoys before our entry into WWII and then in the dark early days of the war kept the flow of equipment, food, and arms to England and the Soviet Union. At the beginning of the war, it was suicide to be a Merchant Marine on a freighter or tanker. The German submarines had a field day, and the USMS suffered the highest proportionate casualties of any branch of service during the war.
