This is an unnamed Bronze Star Medal awarded to Lieut. (jg) John R. House, USN. It is the thin Army style BSM medal which comes in a WW2 Army style titled leatherette case with a lapel button but no ribbon bar. The heart of this lot is three orginal 8.5 x 11 inch carbon copy documents which describe the BSM award to House. One is the temporary BSM citation, the second is the cover letter that went with the temp. citation. The third document is a recommendation for a Navy Commendation Ribbon for House that has a lengthy proposed citation. This recommended award was upgraded to a BSM with a much shortened citation. I cropped the scans of the three documents to improve their legibility. The lot includes a five page summary report from NARA-St. Louis, which includes a copies of House's photo and his permanent BSM citation dated August 1947. My summary of the two citations is in illustration #6. And illustration #7 summarizes House's biography taken from several research sources. The late Colonel Gleim found Archival evidence that the Navy had to "borrow" decoration stocks from the Army during WW2. As of May 1945, these "loans" included 4500 Air Medals, 9000 Bronze Stars, and 60,000 Purple Hearts. This explains why Army style decorations often occur in legitimate Navy medal groups. The Army BSM total for WW2 ran up to about 395,000 medals. read more
