's a pair of the neatest trench art decorated shells I've ever seen. Obviously a matched pair, both marked France; one dated 1944 and one 1945, the two years the Allies were in France from invasion to VE Day. I assume these shells were decorated and owned by an American or possibly a Brit or Aussie but I guess they could be just as well French or even German because I guess the date and spelling would be the same. The shells are beautifully done; not the shallow detail most often seen, these are very deeply spot punched and nicely so. The shells at the point of decorating are about 1/16" thick so you can imagine the depth of the punch marks. The shells are obviously German and are dated 1936 - both have clear markings including the Waffen acceptance mark. The shells are made to be ashtrays with 3 curved British Half Pennies soldered on to form unique butt holders.. In the center of each shell, atop the protruding primer area is what appears to be a .50 Caliber shell. EVERYTHING IS INERT AND UNABLE TO BE FIRED OR DETONATED. The gentleman I got these shell - ashtrays from had some other items that came from a VFW chapter in upstate NY, so it's likely these great examples of GI 'busy work' came from t as well. About 6 1/2" high and 3 1/2" in diameter, these babies are very solid at 1 3/4 pounds each. Look great in that den with read more
