Four piece grouping of Austrian Ace Pilot Gottfried Von Banfield who may have shot down as many as 21 enemy planes, but is officially credited with 9. Included is a signed photograph of Banfield, a signed letter he sent to an American collector, (also signed) a signed WWI postcard dated 1918, and the envelope which the American collector. The photo is I believe a copy of Banfield in his uniform. It was taken in Trieste, Now Italy. During WWI it was Austrian terretory. It is about the size of a post card, but was taken by a professional photographer. Banfield flew arial combat from 1915-1918. In 1916 he commanded all Austrian Naval air squadrons based in Trieste. On New Year's day, 1917 Banfield engaged in a dogfight with Italy's top ace, Francesco Baracca. They fought to a draw, neither man was able to shoot his opponent down. That night on another mission, he scored his first night kill. He also strafed the patrol boats of the Italian Navy. After Trieste was ceded to Italy in 1918, Banfield dropped the Teutonic, "Von" in his name and adapted the Latinized "De Banfield" Please add $6 for priority insured shipping.
