The M1918 or M18 Stahlhelm is the rarest of the German steel helmets. This beautiful example was a WWI veteran bringback, which was mounted on the wall of a famous Birmingham pub, "The Duke of York," as a trophy of the Great War! Recently demolished due to a fire, this historic helmet was rescued and auctioned off and purchased by yours truly! Imagine the war tales and exploits of old Tommies that were told and retold below the watchful eyes of this old stahlhelm, as glasses of ale clinked and fish & chips were gulped down? The two small holes on the right side held the wire by which the helmet was mounted and hung on the wall overlooking the pub. This model M1918 still has about 80% of its green paint finish (as seen in the pics) and has a fine bown patina everyw else. The liner is intact with two of the three original pads still attached. Extensive redesigns were made for the M1918 model. A new two-piece chin strap was introduced, and was attached directly to the helmet liner rather than the shell. However, the chinstrap for this helmet has been lost to time. The M1918 Stahlhelm can be distinguished from the M1916, as the M1918 shell lacks the chinstrap rivet on the lower side of the helmet skirt found on earlier models.
