This is an original WWI German 98 Mauser Rifle Ersatz Bayonet. It is listed as EB--44 in Anthony Carter's Volume III of GERMAN BAYONETS. It was manufactured early in WWI when the Germans needed a large number of easily manufactured bayonets to outfit their rapidly expanding army. This bayonet has the 14 inch plain blade with the short 8 inch fullers. Overall condition of the bayonet is good. All metal has been cleaned and polished in the white. Of these ersatz bayonets the plain blades were manufactured at a ration of 6 plain blades to 4 sawback blades (Ref: Carter's GERMAN BAYONETS, Vol III, page 103). This particular version with the plain blade and 8 inch fuller is seldom found and I have been told by several very knowlegeable German Bayonet collectors that it is the rarer of the two plain bladed versions. The 14 inch fullered plain blade is in very good condition. The blade is crudely made and shows machining marks and grooves. The rust on the muzzle ring and pommel has been removed but some light pitting and denting remains. A CROWN / Fraktur marking is on the spine of the blade. The bayonet catch mechanism works properly and the bayonet mounts readily on the rifle.
