This rare original WWI 98 Mauser Rifle bayonet is the M1898 a/A long quillback blade type. It was manufactured at Rheinische Metallwarren - und Maschinenfabrik, Sommerda, a firm that made these bayonets only for the Saxons for a short period from 1901-1903. These bayonets are seldom found in this collectible condition as most were expended in heavy fighting at the start of WWI. Overall condition of the bayonet is very good. All metal has been cleaned and polished in the white. The 20 1/2 inch quillback blade is in very good condition. The right ricasso of the blade is marked ROM / SOMMERDA. The letters are worn. The one piece wooden grips with 9 diagonal grooves are in worn very good solid condition with a few dents but no splits. The left crossguard is unit marked 100.R.5.20. T are no markings on the pommel or the spine of the blade. Both heads on the wooden grip screws have a fraktur letter proof. T is no scabbard with this bayonet.
