Letter dated 19 November 1915 to KIA seaman's mother relating to her claim for Government compensation following the death of her son, Gilbert Noble On headed notepaper from Aberdeen shipowners and shipping agents Duncan & Leith to Mrs Alex Noble, of 42 College Bounds, Fraserburgh This a contemporary carbon copy, presumably from Duncan & Leith's files because handwritten details of Gilbert's death and his ship are noted on the reverse. This was no doubt for their own records. It states: Vessel Alastair O.N. ( Official Number ) 115573 G.T. ( Gross Tonnage ) 366 Gilbert Noble, 42 College Bds, Fbro. Age 27 Engaged at Aberdeen on 6th Nov 1915 Accident 6th Nov 1915 @ 2.15pm off Southwold Vessel sunk by mine - drowned Witnesses Alex Kean 100 Gt Northern Road, Aberdeen Geo Thomson, 20 Craigie St, do ( Aberdeen ) (Survivors) AB, £3 per week Father & Mother, Mr and Mrs Alex Noble, ages 53, 46 Deceased gave us whole earnings An unusual and poignant survival in excellent condition. Gives details some of which would be unavailable from any other source (e.g. witnesses/survivors). With additional Commonwealth War Graves Commission research which gives Gilbert's parents as Alexander and the late Christina Noble, of 42 College bounds.
