Offered for auction, a WWI-period cowl type flying helmet as worn by a pilot of the Royal Flying Corps, together with a pair of Resistal NAK fur-lined goggles, circa 1916. The helmet is of cream leather, lined in chamois, with the wind-deflecting cylindrical pads above the ear flaps with 3 press-stud fasteners. The drawstring with strap and buckle attachment, meant for adjusting the facial aperture, could be worn either under the chin or around the back. This early-war cowl was purchased by the government in large stocks, usually stamped but not always -- this could also be a private purchase, not uncommon. This equipment was ISSUED and USED -- the goggles have the elastic straps knotted to adjust the size for personal use, and the original fur or sheepskin lining that encircled the facial opening has been removed, not an unusual field-service modification, especially for summer wear. Overall, these pieces are in very good condition, with all parts intact except the fur lining, as mentioned, and a few holes to the chamois lining; otherwise characteristic wear-and-tear of field use, and some crazing along the edges the tinted lenses. Please examine photographs carefully and ask all questions before bidding. A fine piece from my collection which I part with reluctantly, but my loss is your gain. I have a reserve to protect my original investment. Please check out my other auctions, and good luck with all your bidding!
