This is an original World War I U.S. Army Officers manual dated from 1917. It has a captain's signature on the inside cover. It covers sections on uniforms, equipment military courtesy, army staff organization, particular posts as an officer, discipline, esprit de corps, customs of the service, army paperwork (see photo), use of the army for relief purposes in public catastrophes, riot duty, etc. The book is in mint condition inside. The cover is in good condition with a couple very minor water marks on tyhe front and back cover which are almost unnoticable. The book was written by Major James Moss and the manual is sometimes referred to as "Moss's Manual." Moss was the white officer in charge of the U.S. Army's experiments with using bicycle mounted troops in the late 1890s and led a bicycle units from the 25th Colored Regiment from Montana to Jefferson Barrack's in St. Louis to show how fast they could move with cycles instead of marching. Moss later took his black bicycle mounted troops to Cuba in 1898-99 to keep the peace on the streets of Havana following the chaos after the end of Spanish rule at the end of the Spanish-American War. That duty includes riot control, which is one of the chapters. Please e-mail with questions. Shipping insurance and tracking is available upon request.
