US WWI USMC M1 with 2 nd Pattern Cover : Untouched, fresh-out-of-the-woodwork, US WWII M1 steel helmet with second pattern Marine Corps cover. I just bought this helmet from somebody who was cleaning out his late father’s basement. I presume the helmet belonged to his father, but the seller did not know anything about his father’s service history. The helmet is a front seam, fixed bale model with a Westinghouse liner. The shell is missing the long end of the chinstrap and the liner is missing its strap as well. The sweat band is mostly all present, but broken as is a section of the webbing. The shell has a good size dent in the top, about 3” around and ½” or so deep. It appears that whatever impact caused the dent also ripped the cover. The shell is rusty and dirty. I haven’t tried to remove the cover because it is fragile. The cover and shell have very clearly been together for decades. The helmet was in a duffle bag when found and the bag is included with this sale. I’m not sure if the bag is also WWII period. There are no name, unit or other markings on any of these items. Personally I really value helmets that have their original nets and covers, but it is often impossible to tell if a cover or net is really original to the shell, or if they were married together post-war. The vast majority of these combinations were put together after the conflict by collectors. With this one, nobody will ever question whether the cover is original or the cover and helmet have always been together. This is a really great, completely original, salty relic of the Pacific theater of the Second World War. I imagine it was saved by the veteran as a reminder of what must have been a close call (the dent) or maybe a series of close calls. If only this helmet could tell its story! This item comes with a two week inspection period. If for any reason you are not satisfied with it, you are welcome to return it within 14 days as long as it is returned in the same condition.
