This is a WWI Service Medal group of four pieces to the same soldier. This is a very interesting group in that it includes three local medals, plus the WWI Victory Medal with bar FRANCE. The lot includes the Putnam County Medal, the Philipstown, Putnam County Cross and the Manitou Friends Medal. Putnam County and the two communities are in the lower Hudson Valley on the east bank of the river.
The Putnam County Medal is a good quality bronze medal which Planck classifies as WR1 by the H.R. Wright Co. Planck classifies this as a # WH54. It is unique to this locale and has an Indian head design. The ribbon is also unique, being red, white and blue with white stars on the blue stripe (in this case, the ribbon shows substantial wear). The Philipstown Cross is Planck's Type HUF1 by the E.H. Hufnagle Co. Only four towns used that design. Planck misspells "Phillipstown" and had never seen an example, so lists no ribbon. This may or may not be the original. The really scarce item in this lot is the Manitou service medal; Planck was aware of this particular piece, but had never cataloged another. This is a very good quality bronze medal without any hallmarks. The reverse is a stock medal "IN COMMEMORATION OF YOUR SERVICES FOR OUR COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WAR." The reverse has a three dimensional red, white and blue shield affixed at the top center and a design of a wreath and the word "VICTORY." The medal is hand engraved "DANIEL MUNRO 309TH ART. BAT. B. U.S.A. - 1918 BY MANITOU FRIENDS." My guess is that so few of these were awarded that it was cheaper for the "Manitou Friends" to purchase the stock medal and have it individually hand engraved than to commission even a stock Whitehead & Hoag Co. piece to distribute. I have not researched Munro, but the 309th Field Artillery was part of the 78th Division. I am about 80% through listing some 200 different New York State WWI local Victory and Service Medals and groups. I have already listed those that I obtained from the famous Till collection in 1981 and I am now starting the other pieces I have acquired over the last 34 years. Illustrated at 100%. Planchets are generally in XF condition. The Manitou medal is one of the very scarcest of the WWI local issues. NOTE: I am very good about getting my orders out promptly, sometimes same day and almost always within 24 hours. However, lately the U.S. postal "service" has been very spotty. In the last several months, I have had first class insured items take over a month to California and two weeks in New York State. Most are delivered in a timely fashion, but a few are not. NO RESERVE !!! Scarce! Prices have proven to be quite strong for the NYS WWI medals that I have sold thus far. While a few have closed at $30 - $35, many have reached $100 and some have gone for $300+. Buyer pays $3.00 for insured postage. I will combine postage on multiple orders. PAY PAL, check or money order, please. Thanks. George B. Harris, P.O. Box 1136, Alfred, NY 14802.
