WWII B-15 Flight Jacket - Lt. Cecil Clemons, Navigator
This item was donated to the Oregon Air & Space Museum, Eugene, Oregon. Since it duplicates other identical such jackets already in the museum’s collection or display, it has been deemed surplus, and is therefore offered for sale. We have sold Lt. Clemons leather flight suits in the past, but this jacket, not being leather, was placed in a box with a whole bunch of his personal gear... all from that same era. This jacket is a size 40, according to the official label. The label gives the Spec. No. 3220; Stock No. ; Order No. 33-038-44-6338AF. It was made by the Rough Wear Clothing Co.; and below that is “Property U.S. Army Air Forces” . The jacket is personalized by means of a leather patch on the left breast, with his name, and the Navigator’s Wings insignia, burnt into the leather. Also, Clemons printed his name inside right weather-flap, near the top of the inside slit-pocket. If you will look at the photo of the AAF insignia on the left shoulder, you will note that rather than the more common ‘perforated’ white stencil, this one is in color, with a black background, but with the wings and star with the jacket fabric green as the background, and the star is printed in white with a red circle in the center. The lettering is in white, of course. The condition of the jacket is Very Good used, with a single <1/4” moth-hole in each cuff, and two more <1/4” moth holes in the knit waist band, plus 3 more >1/4” moth holes around on the other side of the waist band. For those not familiar with these signs, “<“ translates as ‘less-than’, and “>” translates as ‘more-than’. In this case, the more-than are between 1/4” and 1/2” each, and happen to sit behind where the right sleeve would dangle if the arm was at rest. The last two photos show what may be rust stains, the larger being located in front of the right outside pocket, and the smaller one being on the back side of the left sleeve. There is one pulled thread <1/4” at the UL or the back panel right behind the shoulder. There are NO holes, tears, loose stitching, or other significant faults. The zipper is fully functional and zips quite easily. All snaps, inside and out are also functional. The interior ‘pile’ lining is in Very Good ++ condition, as is the luxurious fur collar and throat strap (just peeking out from under the collar). Shipping weight is 4 pounds, with the jacket in a plastic bag, mailed Parcel Post, domestically. International bidders are invited to contact me regarding a quite to their country... via Priority Mail International. I welcome questions and/or comments.
