Hughes A./C. 15067115 A Few Entries Are Highlighted Below: Introduction "This little epic should have been started at Primary as that was perhaps the most interesting part of our training. Altho we did a lot of griping and wailing during that era I have nothing now but fond memories of Oxnard, the good old Sterman, and friends, instructors, and officers encountered t" "Basic at Bakersfield was not so pleasant, mainly because of the surroundings and some of the, I hate to admit, stinky officers. However we did have lots of fun flying formation and cross country and we did meet some nice people." Dec. 26, 1941. Mather Field, Calif. "By way of dedication, might say that this little volume was presented to us (editorially) for Christmas, 1941 by 'old Sarge,' Uncle Maurice and Aunt Blance, Kearney." Sunday (Feb. 8, 1942). "Casey Green and I decided to take a bit of a trip. Went to S.F. with Russ Kahl, Jim Hart and Garby. This only meant that if we got caught they would have us on the following counts: Out of Bounds, A.W.O.L., failing to sign the Departure Book, and "absent 13:15 Punishment Squad Formation: 1st Inst." Well one of our lower classmen (and I do mean low) a West Pointer, was officer in charge. He either had a hangover or his breakfast eggs had been cooked too long, - at any rate he was gigging hell out of everyone, and he turned K.C., and me in. We've only been charged with being absent from Tour Time. No Court Martial yet. It looks as tho I'll spend another week on the ramp. Oh the life of a Ramp Rat. Just call me Snuffy. * Had fun in San Francisco, however..." * see last photo...which details the 90th Bomb Squadron action during which Lt. Hughes was lost...which refers to Lt. Hughes as "Snuffy." Wednesday Feb. 4. "It looks as tho they've closed the log book on Al Mason and John Martin; an announcement over the radio said their bodies had been found in the plane at Tahoe. May God give them their wings for which they worked so hard, and lived so carefree, and in quest of which they died." Monday, Feb. 9. "Went over to the hangar to look at the plane that crashed in Tahoe. It was a ghastly mess." "Some of the boys that were behind on time took a nite cross country to Fresno. Francis, a boy from Texas, crashed near Chrowchilla under full power, the ship exploded and the only means of identification was his wallet found near the crash and a piece of the tail assembly that had carried the serial # of the plane on it. Three in five days. That's a hell of an average. No one seems to know how it happened, (no one ever does), but t was a 1500' ceiling coupled with carburetor icing conditions. We all feel pretty low about it. Francis was a swell guy, didn't fool around like a lot of us." Friday Feb. 27. "Haven't written a thing for over two weeks, due to the general excitement of having Mary and Dad out plus that of Graduation which came rather prematurely and most suddenly.
