Training handbook used in Air Force schools during World War II, 1943-44 , concerning Navigation Instruments . Handbook presents Restricted information about material used in espionage during the war, and covers the Type D 1A Drift Meter. T are illustrations of instruments such as the drift meter, astrograph, and sextants. The booklet is in typewritten, mimeographed format that was used back then; the type on some pages is light, but readable. Pages are yellowing, salmon-colored covers are faded and somewhat soiled, but the 75-page booklet is complete and readable. The general description on the first page reads: "The D-1A Drift Meter is of the optical periscopic type and is installed on the side wall of the aircraft with the objective and protruding through the fuselage.... The purpose of the driftmeter is to determine the drift of an airplane when the wind brings it off its course. The driftmeter consists of an optical system, the image being erect, and having a magnification of 1/3X..." It's highly technical information, but if you were a navigator on a plane like a B-17 or B-24, this is the kind of stuff you'd have to know.
