ALWAYS see my other auction listings for an amazingly diverse group of items. I'm currently listing several rare and collectable vinyl Jazz records, books, watches, a vintage folk art wooden mechanical toy and various other collectables. NO RESERVE! Offered is a great piece of WWII aviation history. This finely crafted instrument is the "Astro Compass Mk. II". I believe these were manufactured by several companies during WWII to satisfy the huge demand the allied war effort demanded. I'm told the company of Sperti, Inc., of Cincinnati, OH. was the original maker of the Astro Compass Mk. II, but was joined by the W.W. Boes Co. and possibly others after the outbreak of the Second World War. This navigational tool was invaluable to The United States, Royal Australian and British Royal Air Forces and likely some others. I believe the U.S. used it in both the B-24 Liberator and the B-29 Superfortress and possibly other aircraft, the British had it in their Wellington Bomber and I don't know which Australian aircraft utilized it. The example of the Astro Compass Mk. II I'm offering is in exceptional condition and comes in it's original fitted wooden case. The case is in excellent condition as well and features a couple partial paper labels on it's exterior along with 95%+ of it's original paint. The outside of the case also still features the original cloth strap to carry it by, the original hinges and curved hook latches to hold the lid securely in place. The interior of the box is better than the exterior and still retains the original paper label under the lid that explains how to safely remove from and replace the compass in it's case. T is also a small loose paper label that was dropped into the box to inform everyone that "This item has been Re referenced", then lists the old and new item numbers(see pics). The following is some more information about this great piece of WWII aviation and military history I found on a website that is offering one in similar condition for $200.00(That's 4 times my opening bid amount!). The MKII Astro Compass was manufactured by Sperti, Inc. of Cincinnati, Ohio during the World War II era. It was used by aircraft operating in high latitudes to indicate true heading in areas w the magnetic compass becomes unreliable due to large errors in variation and the angle of dip of the earth's magnetic field. When latitude, local hour angle and declination are set on the compass, and the sighting vanes are aligned with the celestial body, the true heading of the aircraft is indicated on the true course dial. The compass is levelled using transverse and longitudinal bubble assemblies. The Astro Compass has a base which may be attached to the aircraft structure. This is an excellent instrument for practical use in the determination of true direction and is also unique as a collector's item. The above information was obtained at http :///mac/navtrak/catalog.htmlPlease see the pictures provided and email me with any questions you might have and I'll do my best to answer them as quickly as I can. Shipping for this item by "Insured USPS Priority Mail" to the continental United States will be $15.00. ALL offshore or foreign bidders must email me for a shipping quote BEFORE bidding. I reserve the right to cancel any bids that do not follow these guidelines. Thanks for taking a look and GOOD LUCK bidders! I'll be offering this item as I do most of my items, with a reasonable opening bid and... NO RESERVE!
