My friend's husband brought these home from Germany after WWII. There are many fascinating stories on the internet about Benutzer binoculars; but, if you're reading this, you already know about them.
This pair measures 7 1/2" tall, 9 1/2" wide and the large lenses are 3" in diameter. They weigh 5 pounds 11.5 ounces. The top is stamped "8 X 60", "49660" and "blc" for Carl Zeiss. They are coated with a black textured finish that may, or may not, have been applied at the factory. It has a hand applied look. They have a Bakelite cover attached with a rubber leash. The cap is stamped "Benutzer" on the top and "IRS", "11944" and "32/T2" inside. I can find no other markings on these binoculars. They have a fixed focus and hinged eyepieces or cups over the viewing lenses. The lenses are clear with no shadows or specks. We could find no scratches on the lenses. The body of the binoculars is scratched and has some missing textured coating. The hinges work easily. The right plastic eyepiece on the cup has a large chip. It unscrews and could be replaced. I can find no dents in the sturdy metal. My friend and her husband have used these to watch whales and dolphins, but they've always been stored away properly. Unfortunately, we do not have their case or leather strap. If you've read this far, you know I am not am expert on binoculars. I will be happy to answer any questions, send you more photographs and, of course combine your shipping. We have no reserve on this auction and no "Buy It Now" price. You may also be interested on the other binoculars I have on auction at this time. I knowledgeable customer asked me to look through the lenses backward with a penlight shining through the eyepiece to see if there is any fractured glass inside. I tried the test and found no fractures, cracks or broken glass inside. Thank you, James, for your helpful question. Best, oz5477
