Up for auction is a truly wonderful vintage Army Air Force flying helmet from WWII. The Type A-11 intermediate flying helmet was a mainstay for Army Air Force fighter pilots and bomber crew who flew high in the skies over occupied Europe in such legendary aircraft as the P-51, P-47, P-38, B-17, B-24, B-25 and B-26. The mid-war A-11 was constructed with factory-added snaps on either side to accomodate the range of oxygen masks in use at the time, like the Type A-8b, A-9, A-10/a, and A-14. As you can see, this classic helmet displays beautifully and would be an asset to any collection. I believe it could also be worn for reenaction, if desired. The exterior leather is as good as you'll find -- very soft and supple and possessing superb color. A crisp Army Air Force symbol is stamped in silver on the exterior (one in blue ink appears on the interior). All buckles, straps and snaps are present and functional. The Bennett's buckle retains its leather covering, and the female section of the buckle is not damaged, as so often is the case with this model. The chin strap still retains its metal tip guard.
