WWII Liberty Ship Brass/Bronze Porthole
This large/Magnificent 45 pound porthole, that came off a WWII Liberty Ship. It's dimensions are (glass) 19 1/2 " X 14 3/4 " and brass 24 X 17 1/2 ". The glass/brass everything is original and never altered although as you can see at some point it was polished. It was removed at the end of WWII, just after it was sent to the scrap yard. Not 5, 10...60 years later...which means it is exactly the way is was when it saw action during it's years at sea. It belonged to my Uncle and the building he had it in is being torn down so he hopes it will go to a good home. My Uncle was a merchant Marine throughout the war. On D-Day he Captained a Liberty Ship off the coast of Normandy. At the end of the war he moved on to work for US Lines and at one point Captained the largest container ship in the world. He got this porthole as well as some other items just before moving on to US Lines, he was involved with a group of Merchant Marines and other enlisted men/women who oversaw/helped scrap some Liberty Ships at the very end of the war. It weighs around 45++ LBS. It has the numbers 3 in a few places and W.U.B. on the brass and SI DIN SEKURIT on the glass. This is a timepiece of American history and who knows what this porthole and the men and women on that ship saw. Shipping Insurance is required and included. It will likely weigh 65++ pounds when packed, It could end up costing less but better to have it end up cheaper and get a refund. Not sure who/what company would be best to use...There is a shipping quote included but is an estimate, eBay only offers USPS and UPS...I am hoping I can get someone to do a local pickup or I can deliver it locally in NJ say 20 mile for free, NY would be plus tolls and after 20 miles say .50/mile. LOCAL PICKUP IS/WOULD BE AWESOME and FREE Email me any question. Thanks for looking, Dave
