measuring 25 inches in length from handle to handle, 15 inches in width at the widest point, and weighing approximately seven (7) pounds, tray is of solid sterling silver. This massive historic tray was presented to Major General William C. Chase, Commanding General of the First Cavalry Division by the City of Providence, Rhode Island shortly after the close of WWII. Tray is complete with two ornate scalloped side handles, stepped and raised rim, and center engraved presentation inscription: "Presented by the Citizens of Providence to Major General William C. Chase, Commanding General, First Cavalry Division, United States Army, In grateful recognition of the honorable and faithful service performed by him as a member of the Armed Forces of the United States of America in World War I, 1917 - 1918, and in World War II, 1941 - 1945; Dennis J. Roberts, Mayor of Providence"; tray center field further presents engraved seal of the City of Providence, Rhode Island. General Chase's military career was highlighted by a number of important events. On January 31, 1945 General Douglas Macarthur order the First Cavalry Division to take Manila and capture the presidential palace and the legislative building. The next day, "The Flying Column" as the rescue unit came to be known, under the command of General William C. Chase, sliced through 100 miles of Japanese held territory at times travelling over 50 miles per hour in a race to Manila. On February 3, 1945 the rescue column under heavy Japanese sniper fire reached its objective, threw open the gates of the presidential palace, and set up a perimeter around the palace area. (Please See: Photo of General Chase holding the divisional colors as General Eichelberger attaches another streamer during official ceremonies following the historic dash to Manila by General Chase and his "Flying Column".) Major General Chase and the First Cavalry Division again engaged in a very historic first when on September 8, 1945, General Chase once again leading a First Cavalry unit left Hara-Machida with Tokyo as their destination. It has been officially recorded in the First Cavalry Division military history, that the column stopped at the Tokyo City limits, w General Chase exited his vehicle and stepped across the Tokyo City boundary tby putting the American Occupational Army officially in Tokyo and the First Cavalry Division lead by Major General Chase, the "First in Tokyo" as the unit came to be hailed in the press and media of the period. Shortly after the end of the war Major General William C. Chase (Class of 1916) returned to his alma mater of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and donated to the University the American flag which had been captured by the Japanese from the headquarters of General Douglas MacArthur in 1942 and which had been recaptured by a unit under Chase's command in February, 1945. It was on this occasion of the visit to Brown University that this historic tray is believed to have been presented to Major General Chase. This historic tray is further distinguished by another individual, the Mayor of Providence, Dennis J. Roberts. Mayor Roberts (1903 - 1994) served as a Rhode Island delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1936, 1940, 1948, and 1960. Elected as Governor of of the state in 1951 and serving until 1959, Governor Roberts engaged in a long and colorful political career in the state of Rhode Island. Tray underside is hallmarked to the "GORHAM" silver firm and is inscribed "STERLING". Tray having normal wear and presents a semitarnished patina, easily cleaned to owner's taste.
