~ WWII FOLDING SHOVEL AND WWII CARRIER IN GOOD CONDITION ~ This shovel is unique- It is definitely an old shovel from the period of WWII, however, after very close inspection the words "JAPAN" are imbossed on the shovel blade. The only explanation we could think of was that it was made pre-WWII in Japan? T are no writings in Japanese, so it is not a japanese shovel. I took a picture of the embossed "JAPAN" but you may not be able to see it well. The shovel works good- the head has wear at the point and back approx. 4 inches. The head has OD paint on it. The handle metal is painted OD (Olive Drab) but also has wear. The wood handle was painted OD, but most of it is worn off. The shovel carrier is made out of OD canvas with 2 small pieces of leather at each edge, metal snap/dot closure, and the back has 6 metal grommets with one metal hanger on 2 of the grommets. The carrier is dirty and you can slightly see "U.S." on the front. T are a few very small holes on the top flap of the carrier. T are rivets holding the carrier together at the bottom and the top sides. Approximate dimensions: Shovel folded: 19-1/2", open, 26-3/4", width of Shovel head: 6" length of Shovel Head: 8-1/2"; Carrier length closed: 10-1/2", width at widest 7".
