WWII JAPANESE CASED ARTILLERY SPOTTER BINOCULARS WITH US ARMY PAPERS ALLOWING THEM TO BE LEGALLY BROUGHT BACK TO THE UNITED STATES
For auction is a great World War II Japanese cased set of artillery spotter binoculars from the estate of the veteran, retired Captain Edward Raymond Snider O1181767. This auction includes all related items pictured. There are other items from the same estate such as Japanese officer Samurai swords with US Army papers, uniform grouping and other smaller items running simultaneously in other auctions. First a bit of information about the officer. Captain Snider graduated from Officer's Candidate School (OCS) on May 5, 1943. During World War II, he was stationed in the Pacific. He graduated from the US Army Field Artillery School Fort Sill, Oklahoma and was, for a period of time, an active Artillery Officer. Prior to the end of World War II, he became a Censor Officer and transferred to Intelligence. Following World War II, he continued as an Intelligence Officer at the Presidio in San Francisco and retired from active duty as a captain. During World War II he served with the Americal Division and the US Army 91st Division. As a Censor / Intelligence Officer, he probably knew what buttons to push in order to bring items back to the United States from the Pacific legally. The original US Army documents accompany the cased binocular set. This grouping consists of all the following: 1) Copies of documents and photos of Captain Snider during WWII. The family wanted to retain the original documents and photos. In the photo, Captain Snider is pictured in the front row, middle. All auction entries from his estate will have copies of his personal documents and photos; 2) the two original documents allowing him to bring the cased binocular set back with him to the United States and; 3) The period cased artillery binocular spotter set complete as pictured. The wooden case for the binoculars measures approximately 11 1/8 x 11 x 5 1/8 inches. There are two hooks on the side of the case to keep the lid from opening while the binoculars are in transport. The lid has two hinges and opens for full access to the binoculars. The top of the lid has the Japanese nomenclature and serial number. The top of the case also has a canvass handle for transport. Once the box is opened, the full contents of the case can easily be viewed. The binoculars fit into the lower compartment of the case while the top contains two separate draws that hold, what seem to be, extra lenses for the binoculars. The drawers are kept in place by a wooden peg on a screw swivel. One the swivel is in the down position, the drawers slide out for access to the extra lenses. None of the extra lenses have maker marks. One set is clear glass while the other seems to have a yellow tint. There is a small star like symbol stamped on the inside top of the case. The binoculars are large and heavy. The large front lenses are 3 1/8 inches in diameter. The rear lenses are both adjustable for focusing and both have a lock to keep them from turning once the focus is acquired. There are markings found on the binoculars. On the left is the company name of NIKKO with a serial number of "No. 12180" which matches the serial number found on the top of the box. The right side of the binoculars is marked with the power of "10X70mm" and with what appears to be a "7" degree marking beneath the power marking. The only other markings found on the binoculars are points of degree as the focus is achieved. The entire cased set of binoculars are in very good condition. The rubber around the front eye pieces are still in great shape. The green neck cord is original to the binoculars. The overall condition of this item is very good. The binicular lenses may need to be dusted or cleaned. The box shows sign of normal use, age and storage. A very rare and well preserved item from World War II. Not many artillery spotter binoculars are found and then extremely few found in their original case with all the proper marking and with US Army papers. A true museum quality it...
