Rare and original World War II Japanese Type “I” Imperial Navy rifle cleaning kit. An excellent example of the 6.5 caliber cleaning kit for the scarce Type I naval rifle. Extremely difficult to find and much rarer than the similar Arisaka 7.7 caliber kits. This type of kit was issued on the squad level and not to each individual soldier which limited the number produced and contributes to the scarcity. Designed for the Imperial Japanese Navy the Type I rifle was a hybrid of the Type 38 Arisaka and the Italian Carcano and was only produced in very limited quantities during 1938 and 1939. The kit consists of the canvas carrying case reinforced at the top closure flap with leather. The canvas kit is 10 inches in length and 2 inches wide and held together by a central line of stitching. The closing strap, buckle holder and strap loop are also leather, held in place with bright metal domed head rivets. The original metal roller buckle is also finished in bright metal and works perfectly. It should be noted that this type of case construction (center seam with bright metal parts) is unique to the Type I cleaning kits. The case holds a variety of original cleaning tools some of which are exclusive to only the Type I. This kit includes one blued steel section of threaded cleaning rod, a brass combination tool, a bore brush, a brass “screw or jag” cleaning tip, and a wood and metal chamber guide with removable wooden plug. I am unable to locate any stamps or markings on any of the tools. The chamber guide is very unusual as it is lined with a brass tube and has a fitted blued steel clamp to represent the bolt handle of the rifle. Lastly there is a split type pin wooden plug with red painted head which fits neatly into either end of the chamber guide. It should be noted that this chamber guide will only fit correctly in the Type I rifle’s chamber. The following tools as described above are specific to the Type I cleaning kits: the previously mentioned chamber guide (with plug device), the brass combination tool, and this style bore cleaning brush. A couple of parts may be missing as some references also show a screwdriver tool, a bore brush protector, and an extra steel cleaning rod section for this kit. Other references omit the screwdriver tool and show only one section of cleaning rod. Perhaps with the scarcity of these kits even the experts and authors can not agree on the contents! The canvas case shows some even wear and soiling which would probably clean up a bit if desired. The leather areas show wear but are still sturdy and supple. I am unable to locate any kanji or other markings on the case. The tools show some use and wear with scattered light patina but there is no rust, pitting or damage. This is an authentic all original squad leader’s cleaning kit for the Type I rifle which can be referenced on page 195 of “Military Rifles of Japan” (7th printing, 2001) by Fred Honeycutt or pages I-24 to I-26 of Japanese Military Rifles, Carbines and their Accessories by Jerry Price. These reference works as well as Duncan McCollum’s Japanese Rifles of WWII also contain details on the scarce Imperial Navy Type I rifle. A very desirable accessory for your Japanese militaria collection that rarely comes up for sale and is often missing from even advanced collections. As always, priced fairly and with no reserve.
