I recently acquired a large collection of documents, photographs, letters and other WWI & WWII items that belonged to Rear Admiral Bunkley. This letter titled "COMMANDER BATTLESHIPS, BATTLE FORCE C/O FLEET POSTMASTER, SAN FRANCISO, CALIFORNIA" is a personal typed letter from Vice Admiral Walter Stratton Anderson to his friend Commander Bunkley thanking him for his bravery at Pearl Harbor. The letter is signed in blue in by Vice Admiral Anderson and he also writes "W'ELL GET EM YET!" at the bottom of the page. The 8 x 10 1/2 inch letter is on officail Navy stationary with an eagle watermark (see last picture). This is an authentic lette this is NOT a copy! Joel William Bunkley (1887-1967) Born on July 3, in Macon, Georgia. Graduated from Annapolis in 1909 and commissined in 1911. Served with the Naval Railway Battalion in France in World War I. Aide to the Commander of the Destroyer Force, Atlantic Fleet 1919-1920. Aide to the Commander in Chief Asiatic Fleet 1923-1924. Commanding Officer of the Pruitt, Childs and Banner 1924-1926, then the Wood and Greer 1928-1930. Member of the U.S. Naval Mission to Argentina 1934-1937. Commander of Destroyer Squadron Ten 1838-1939. Commanding Officer of ther California 1940-1942, sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
