WWII U.S. Artillery Timed Fuse
contains no primer. circa early 1940's Markings: 73-7-1-0 MECH. MKI-P4/85-22 Brass 1Lb 3.8oz. 4.75" tip to base, 2.37" dia. cone base 1.7" outer dia. thread #14 thread Geared key wind-up , no key included. The cone is held on by a brass wire feed through the base. The cone and the base, when mated, form a split ring type union. Wire not included. Firing pin mechanism set at the factory. Spring wound at the factory. At launch....timer starts and fuse is armed Operator turns cone to required time, timer is set. The round is launched. The forward motion produces "G" forces that cause a plunger to drop. The plunger releases the swing arm on the timer. The timer in running. The spinning of the round produces a centrifugal force that swings a spring loaded block from under the firing pin unit. The round is armed. When the timer disk completes it's revolution it releases an arm, that releases a pin, that is connected to a cylinder with a flat side. The downward force from the spring loaded firing pin causes the above device to rotate away. The firing pin impacts the primer.
