You are bidding on an Original Vintage World War Two United States Navy Full Size Chief Petty Officer Storekeeper Mate Silver Bullion on Blue Serge Wool Rating Rate in unused excellent condition Made by Vanguard . This beautiful silver rating which comes with the original wrapper was never used nor sewn on a uniform, and is in very good condition with no damage nor mothing noted. The rate measures @ 6 1/2" in height by 4 7/8" in width. This is part of a large collection of WWII US Navy and US Coast Guard Ratings and Shoulder Boards from a 1940's Era Uniform Store that I will be listing on Ebay so please watch for further listings.The U.S. Navy 's enlisted occupational system is a product of more than 200 years of Naval evolution. The Navy of the United Colonies of the 1775 era offered only a few different jobs above the ordinary level of seaman. These included Boatswain's Mate , Quartermaster , Gunner's Mate , Master-at-Arms , Cook , Armorer , and Cockswain . These were titles of the jobs that individuals were actually performing and became the basis for petty officers and ratings. During this time, ship crews were taken from civilian life and enlisted for only one cruise, thus making the job at hand rather than career possibilities the primary consideration. It was not until 1841 that distinguishing marks for a rating were prescribed in the Regulations of the Secretary of the Navy and specialty marks were not added to enlisted men's uniforms until 1866. The marks consisted of the tools or instruments used in each rating's specific duty. The Master-at-Arms, the police officer of a ship, wore the star of authority and the Gunner's Mate wore two crossed cannons. Currently, all specialty marks for new ratings are approved by the Permanent Naval Uniform Board which is a division of the Bureau of Naval Personnel. [3] As the Navy's rating system has changed so has the Navy. The first steamship , mine , radar , torpedo , aircraft carrier , and many other "firsts" all established a new era in the Navy, and each directly impacted the enlisted occupation structure. During World War II , the Navy also briefly maintained a rating of Specialist , similar to the rank in the United States Army . The rating of Specialist was discontinued in 1948.After more than 200 years of evolution, today's Navy enlisted rating structure still plays a key role in career development, serves as a basis for training, detailing, advancement, and simply keeping tabs on several hundred thousand Navy Personnel Petty OfficerThe Petty Officer can trace his title back to the old French word petit meaning something small. Over the years the word also came to mean minor, secondary and subordinate. In medieval and later England just about every village had several "petite", "pety" or "petty" officials/officers who were subordinate to such major officials as the steward of sheriff. The petty officers were the assistants to the senior officials.The senior officers of the early British warships, such as the Boatswain, Gunner and Carpenter, also had assistants or "mates." Since the early seamen knew petty officers in their home villages they used the term to describe the minor officials aboard their ships. A ship's Captain or Master chose his own Petty Officers who served at his pleasure. At the end of a voyage or whenever the ship's crew was paid off and released the Petty Officers lost their positions and titles. T were Petty Officers in the British navy in the Seventeenth Century and perhaps earlier but the rank did not become official until 1808.Petty Officers were important members of our Navy right from its beginnings and were also appointed by their ship's Captain.
