For your consideration, this original, authentic World War II bomber jacket. This was issued to the 535th Bombardment Squadron (HEAVY) during WWII. The unit was assigned to the European Theater of Operation (ETO) in May 1943 and was deployed under the VIII Bomber Command, until German capitulation in May 1945. After returning to the United States, the unit was deactivated in August 1945. In April 1944, B-17 bomber 42-31990 of 535th Bomb Squadron, 381st Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, USAAF, was christened “Stage Door Canteen” by Mary Churchill (daughter of the British Prime Minister), Vivien Leigh and Lawrence Olivier. The bomber had 76 consecutive non-abortive missions and had completed 105 missions by the end of World War 2. In addition, it was the first ship in ETO to use parachutes for brakes after its hydraulic system had been shot out on a mission. On Friday 13th October 1944, the crew of B-17 “Stage Door Canteen” and officers of Ridgewell Airbase, Essex, were formal guests of the Stage Door Canteen on Picadilly Circus in London, for a dinner and stage show. This beautiful jacket is very rare. The image is hand painted on the back, with a banner painted over the back "Stage Door Canteen." This jacket has been well worn, has some dry spots, cracks, and small tears in the leather. The zipper is missing a tooth and the jacket has been re-lined. Marks on the right sleeve and lapel that are off white (not sure what or how they got there, visible in the photos, not very large). I was offered over $1000.00 just for the "devil" patch on the front. Will make a great piece for anyone's collection. Good Luck and .
