Up for auction is a truly unique piece, even among the rare world of X Frame or "Dante" chairs. After talking with multiple antiques dealers in the US and UK, the consensus is that this piece is continental in origin, with the Moorish designs on the leatherwork favoring a Spanish creation. Exact age is unknown, but estimates range from mid 19th century to very early 20th. Although the exact origins and history are a bit of a mystery, the real value of this piece comes in watching the reaction of those who see it for the first time. Without exception, everyone who has seen this chair in person has fallen in love with it. Personally, I feel the faces carved on the upper part of each arm are the most distinctive part, and a big part of my reluctance to let this one go.
Condition: Overall, very good to excellent. Depending on taste, the chair could benefit from a careful clean and wax treatment, but shows no obvious signs of damage. The wood appears to be solid oak throughout. This is still a very usable chair, and surprisingly comfortable. The leather back is near mint, while the leather seat shows some minor use on the front edge. The photographs greatly exaggerate the appearance of the fine cracks in the leather. I wanted to make sure all the details of the pattern were clearly visible, but in normal light the leather has a much smoother appearance. Price: I have scoured the net for comparable pieces, and while finding no exact matches, I have found a very few of similar design. One average, they run between $2000 for a single chair to $4500 or more for a matched pair. Not only is this a great conversation piece, but a worthwhile investment as well.
