ITEM: Antique souvenir plateSUBJECT: Brooklyn, N.Y. / Brooklyn Bridge / Battleship Maine MANUFACTURER: "The Rowland & Marsellus Co. / Staffordshire England" SIZE: 9-3/4" (diameter); 1-1/8" (depth - distance from rim to back) WEIGHT: 1 lb, 3 oz. (approx. - not including packing material) COLOR(S): "Flow Blue" on white background (see pictures) MATERIAL: Chinaware AGE: 1893-1910 (educated guess) ORIGINAL PACKAGING: N/A DESCRIPTION: we have a superb, early Souvenir Plate from the LARGE collection we will be offering this week. This plate was created by the firm of Rowland & Marsellus Co. (a New York firm that worked with various Staffordshire potteries to create a line of distinctive "flow blue" glaze, rolled-edge Souvenir Plates 'round the Turn of the Century). R & M's distinctive rolled-edge plates always employed the same format: a scallop pattern border around a bowed rim with six medallion illustrations and a round center view vista of primary importance. In this case, the plate features the remarkable Brooklyn Bridge as its main focus. The six medallions depict: "The City Hall, Square & Court House;" " Fort Greene Park;" "Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Arch" (at Grand Army Plaza in Park Slope); Prospect Park - Boulevard Entrance" (Prospect Park was a masterpiece of genius landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted); "Institute of Arts & Sciences" (aka Brooklyn Museum); "Battleship 'Maine" in Navy Yard" (yes, that's right, the same ship that played a pivotal role in 1898 in the Spanish American War, as in: "Remember the Maine"). As with all R&M plates, the quality of design and depiction is absolutely top drawer. The rich, melting "flow blue" glaze - so typical of Staffordshire wares - is irresistible. Perhaps, best of all, though, is the exquisite waterfront landscape with the stately Brooklyn Bridge. It is superb. Needless to say, this plate would be an extra special addition to any grouping of Brooklyn Interest items ... or, for that matter, any collection of vintage Souvenir "State Plates" - not to mention its interest to Battleship Maine aficionados! PLEASE NOTE: WITH EACH PLATE WE ARE SELLING, COMES A QUALITY, CUSHIONED-GRIP, BRASS FINISH, SPRING BACK PLATE HANGER (a $2 value in itself)! T are NO chips, cracks, surface scratches, and only the finest sort of standard crazing. THIS PLATE IS A GEM! NOTE: vintage collector plates often have three small rough spots in the glaze on the back at the points w the plate was supported during firing. They are "as issued" and NOT defects.
