These bank items are truly a great piece of US history. Banks used these items for regular transactions, however also used them as a form of advertising for the bank (a practice still used today).
This promotional bank was usually issued without a key so the depositor would have to bring it into the bank to open it and deposit the contents in their account.
These "barrel savings banks" were a popular way to provide advertising for banks during this era. They were manufactured by the Chicago Thrift Company patented 1923.
