The years 1911-1913 were a turning point in Chinese (and therefore World) History. That is when millennia of rule by the old Imperial Dynasties ended and the "modern" Republic of China was born.

This bond, more than any other document you will find, forever memorializes that great political and historical sea change. It is the Reorganisation Gold Loan Bond of 1913 issued by the new Chinese Government to finance the foundling Nation!!!

The bond is exquisitely steel-engraved by Waterlow & Sons, England's finest engravers, in several stunning shades of orange and brown with black printing and a pale yellow underprint that create a mesmerizing visual impression.

The bond is tremendous in size, measuring approx. 13" x 18" with a like-sized sheet of 43 large beautfiul coupons. It features 3 phenomenal vignettes (steel-etched illustrations), each replete with images of the Old China including pagodas, junks, peasants in traditional pointed hats, and an Imperial Palace.

The central vignette, which is postively enormous, feautures the God Mercury seated on a bale examining a detailed dynamo (symbolic of the future political and economic dynamo China would become!). Behind him, a single stack steamship lies at anchor awaiting China's precious exports. Mercury also appears on each of the coupons!

2 Magnificent red chops (one of them huge) and vertical calligraphy grace the bottom of the bond, which is executed in four languages (English, German, French, and Russan). The entire reverse is filled with text and financial data, which, interestingly enough, still to this day entitles the bearer to principal and interest ( Millions of Dollars by now !!), a fact that has been the subject of international lawsuits for decades! There have been many indications of late that this bond may indeed still be redeemable - for up to 1000 times our starting price!! Please bear that in mind when bidding, although no guarantees are made as to redemption .

We presently have one bond from each of 4 issuing banks ! The banks are Banque de L'Indochine, The Russo-Asiatic Bank, The Deutsch-Asiatische bank and HSBC (Hong Kong Shangai Banking Corporation). The Winning Bidder may buy bonds from 1, 2 or all 3 of the other banks at the same closing price!! This is probably the only opportunity in the world to get a complete 4-bank set !! Email for details.

If you are seeking history, rarity and beauty, not to mention an outstanding scripophily and financial investment, look no further. When you hang this piece matted and framed under a spotlight, you will have the show piece of a lifetime! Serial number may vary. There may be a very faint trace of dampstaining along the top edge that is only visible on the back. We do not make any warranties as to the negotiability or redemption value of the bond.
